Music Review of 7 Khoon Maaf

7 Khoon Maaf is the latest movie directed by Vishal Bhardwaj , known for his 'different' movies. This one stars Priyanka Chopra in 7 different roles...(last time she did multiple roles .. for What's your Rashee"... well lets not talk about the movie further.... it sucked big time)...

Let's talk about this new movie and it's music...

Well from the promos it appears the movie is some sort of dark movie ... with all actors in grey shades...
However, the movie's music is a mixture of white, black and grey shades..  Well we expect that from Vishal Bhardwaj ... remember Chappa Chappa, Dhantadan.... Sapne main milti hain...

Starts with the popular 'Darlingg' sung by (now Padma Shri awardee...) - Usha Uthup and Rekha Bhardwaj... which is heavily inspired by a Russian folk song...The song is definitely foot tapping...but nothing great shakes....though Usha Uthap's vocals give it a different edge.... Recommended for all her die-hard fans..

Vishal sings probably the best song in the album "Bekaraan" ... a slow number which starts of slowly.. but gathers pace as it goes on.. Along with the beautiful lyrics of Gulzaar.,.("Aankhein bandh keejay na
Doobne lagey hai hum"...).. Vishal does a smashing job on the song...

Next is "O Mama" sung by KK...who in his own amazing voice sings a rockish number ... It's a good song... nice rock feel...KK's vocals hold the song throughout.. never once flattering...
Reminds me of this absolute brilliant song that KK had sung for Vishal Bharadwaj in the yet unreleased (and never will be released movie..  Anurag Kashyap's Paanch).. "Main Khuda"...
This song , though good , doesn't match up to the raw punch in KK's voice when he started of his career with that song...(It being one of his first... yes the movie is THAT old)....

"Awaara" sung by Master Saleem and "Tere Liye"  by Suresh Wadkar...,  the former has a sufi-touch , the latter has a semi-classical touch... both songs sound great since they have great vocalists...However, the icing on the cake is they both feature solos by two great artists...

Niladri Kumar plays the Sitar on "Awaara"...and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt plays the Veena on "Tere Liye".. Both these artists make these 2 songs extra special...

"Dil dil hain" sung by Suraj Jagan..(he of "Give me some sunshine" from 3 Idiots fame...) is a good rock and roll number... a song that wont be liked by all people... only a few hard core rock n roll fans...
Though not as good as his "Zahreelay" from Rock On... Suraj does a good job... with some heavy duty screaming in the latter half of the song.

"Yeshu" by Rekha Bhardwaj is a good song ... sung beautifully .. though it wont find many takers....It's definitely a listen for Rekha's voice....

"Doosri Darling" features Usha Uthup , Rekha Bhardwaj (yes ... Vishal has too fallen in the Pritam trap of Reprises ....and Revisited...)... the chorus has the beautiful voice of Clinton Cerejo.. and newcomer Francois Castellino... Not much different then the first one... the only difference being it starts with the lyrics of the original Russian folk song...

The last song in the album is an acoustic version of "O Mama" by KK ... a beautiful, short and subdued version of the original "O Mama"....It features KK and only a guitar... Great way to finish off a great album...

Vishal Bhardwaj stamps his authority on this album.... Reminding us all over again that he is one of the finest music composers in our country... coming up with an amazing set of songs once again....

My favourites among them are "Bekaraan" and "O Mama" (both versions)... Do give this album a listen...
Definitely a big thumbs-up from me....
